Clubhouse is a social network based on content in audio format launched at the beginning of 2020. Its evolution since then and the diffusion acquired thanks to the support of some of its most recognized users, such as Elon Musk or Mark Zuckerberg, have made it in a fashionable social environment in a certain sector of the population.
Its creators are Rohan Seth and Paul Davison, who have
extensive experience in projects that use technology to connect people. Among
those projects was “Highlight,” an app launched by Davison in 2012 that tracked
users' whereabouts to show them profiles of close people with similar interests
or shared connections. Within a year of its inception, Highlight was deemed too
invasive and disappeared. Davison has worked in large companies in the
technology sector such as Google or Pinterest.
For his part, Rohan Seth, works in parallel on a project
with personal involvement, Lydia Accelerator , whose mission is to accelerate
genetic treatments in order to personalize them for children born with severe
genetic mutations.
Clubhouse can be defined as a large virtual conference room
with different rooms in which users talk about the topics they like and
interest and invite other users to listen.
According to the network itself, "it is a space for
authentic conversation and expression where to have fun, learn, connect with
other users around the world, share enriching experiences ...". The
authenticity of the conversations that are developed and shared is based on a series
of rules or "best practices" that the Clubhouse enforces. In
addition, there are a series of "good practices" defined according to
the role that one has within each conversation. These roles are: moderator,
speaker, and listener. Let's take a closer air at each of them.
Roles en Clubhouse
Clubhouse users can acquire 3 types of roles:
1.Moderator.
2.Speaker.
3.Listener.
The moderator
The person who starts a room in the Clubhouse is the
moderator . As such, it should guide the conversation and has a great influence
on the content of the conversation and the style of conversation that develops.
Additionally, the moderator has the power to add or remove other users.
Among the “best practices” as a moderator, the following
stand out:
•Select the group of speakers carefully: be aware of which
people are invited to speak, trying to include diverse perspectives to enrich
the conversation.
•Actively lead the conversation: In addition to
participating in the conversation, moderators can ask other speakers to join in
the conversation by asking their point of view or asking interesting questions
to the group.
•Take into account the experience of the audience: Speakers
enjoy asking questions, participating in a debate or offering their comments in
real time. The facilitator can focus on the questions or on a specific speaker
when appropriate.
Speakers
Speakers are the people who have the ability to speak in a
room. The user who starts the room, in addition to being a moderator, is also a
speaker by default. The other users who join have the role of listener and can
become speakers whenever they are invited to speak.
Recommended speaking practices are:
•Share the limelight by taking turns speaking in order to
broaden the depth of the conversation, attracting different types of opinions.
•Know when to shut up. The application provides users with a
mute button that is recommended to use when not participating in the
conversation, thus reducing background noise and increasing the quality of
communications. It is recommended to stop muting to recognize or comment on
what another person is talking about or to indicate that they want to speak
next, in order to make the conversations fluid.
•Quit when you want: Speakers can feel free to leave their
role at any time they want without feeling judged. They can become listeners or
leave the room by clicking on the corresponding button.
